Pullen at Destination: Out

Check out this beautiful appreciation of Don Pullen at Destination: Out, posted on August 2. All I can add is an emphatic, "Yes!" These are many of the same basic points of my thesis. Props to writers and proprietors Chilly Jay Chill and Prof. Drew LeDrew (not joking). Note: read the comments.

A thesis on Don Pullen? That certainly piques my interest. I stumbled upon your blog serendipitously - I'd love to hear more about your writing and what your angle on Mr. Pullen's work is.

Yes, I'm writing my thesis on Don Pullen. A rough draft is due in December, and I expect to be posting brief observations and updates on this weblog from now until then. If you ever have anything to add, please do! By the way, how did you discover Pullen's work? He's certainly not easy to come by these days--most of his albums are imports or out of print. The Mosaic Box is incredible, but his earlier work is good, too. And his mainstream sideman work with Charles Williams from the early seventies needs to be rediscovered. There is too little discussion of this brilliant man, so let's broaden the conversation. Anyone have a copy of his first Live at Yale LP with Milford Graves from 1966?
